What clogged gutters actually cost you

A clogged gutter isn't just an eyesore. Water that can't move through a gutter has to go somewhere, and where it usually goes is behind your fascia board, into your soffit, or down the side of your foundation. That kind of damage starts quietly and gets expensive fast. Ahomeservices has been doing gutter cleaning across the Greater Houston area for 14 years, and Jon's crew has seen what happens to houses that skip a season or two. If your gutters are full, call (832) 244-5652 before the next hard rain makes the decision for you.

Gutter cleaning isn't complicated work, but it's work that has to be done completely. Half-cleared gutters still back up. We flush the downspouts, clear the channels from end to end, and check that water is actually moving the way it should before we leave. What drives the scope of the job is usually the pitch of your roof, how many stories you've got, and how long it's been since the gutters were last touched. Heavily compacted debris in older gutters takes longer than a light seasonal clearing. Every job is different, contact Ahomeservices for an accurate estimate.

THE REAL RISK

Why gutters fail faster than homeowners expect

Gulf Coast weather hits gutters hard. Here's what actually goes wrong.

01

Debris buildup blocks downspouts first

Leaves and shingle grit pack into downspout elbows before the channel itself fills. Water looks like it's draining until it isn't, then it's already overflowing at the seam.

02

Standing water warps the gutter itself

Water that sits in an aluminum gutter for days causes the metal to sag and pull away from the fascia. Once the hanger separates, you're looking at a rehang job on top of the cleaning.

03

Overflow saturates the soil at your foundation

A gutter that spills directly at the drip line sends water straight down alongside your slab. In clay-heavy soils this is a foundation problem waiting to develop, not a theory, something we see on houses that skipped a few years.

04

Mold and rot follow moisture into the soffit

Once water gets behind the fascia it wicks into the soffit material. You won't see it from the ground. By the time there's visible staining, the wood has usually been wet for a while.

THE PROCESS

How we clean gutters

  1. 01

    Clear the channel

We remove all debris by hand from the gutter channel, leaves, seed pods, shingle granules, whatever's in there. No blowing loose material onto your roof or into your yard.

  2. 02

    Flush the downspouts

Every downspout gets flushed with water to confirm it's clear end to end. If there's a blockage lower in the pipe, we break it loose. A clean gutter with a blocked downspout still backs up.

  3. 03

    Confirm drainage before we leave

We check that water flows freely to the downspout exit and moves away from the foundation. If something doesn't look right, a low spot, a pulling hanger, a cracked seam, we'll tell you before we pack up.

Services that pair with gutter cleaning

One visit can cover more than just the gutters. Here's what makes sense to combine.

01

Pressure Washing

Once the gutters are clear, organic staining on the siding and driveway usually shows up. We do pressure washing on the same visit so you're not scheduling a second trip.

02

Window Cleaning

Gutter debris drags streaks down window glass when it overflows. Interior and exterior window cleaning pairs naturally with a gutter job, the windows come out right when the source of the streaking is already handled.

03

Siding Washing

Overflow staining on vinyl and Hardie siding needs a soft-wash approach, not high pressure. Our siding washing service handles that without damaging the finish or forcing water behind the panels.

04

General Handyman Repairs

If we find a pulling hanger, a cracked section, or a downspout that's separated, we can handle minor repairs on the spot or schedule a return through our general handyman services rather than leaving you to find a separate contractor.

Frequently asked questions

How often should gutters be cleaned in the Greater Houston area?
Twice a year is the floor for most houses here. Spring cleaning clears out what winter dropped, and a fall cleaning handles the heaviest leaf fall before the rainy season peaks. If you've got mature trees overhanging the roofline, especially live oaks or pine, you may need a third visit. Gutters that go more than 12 months between cleanings tend to have compacted debris that takes longer to clear and is harder on the gutters themselves.
What happens if a downspout is blocked and water has nowhere to go?
It backs up into the gutter channel, which then overflows at the lowest point. That low point is usually near a corner or at a seam, and it's often right above a foundation bed or a window. Water spilling in the same spot every rain event will erode soil, stain siding, and eventually find its way into the soffit if the fascia isn't perfectly sealed. We flush every downspout as part of the cleaning. A clear channel with a blocked pipe is still a problem.
Can I wait until gutters are visibly overflowing before calling?
You can, but by that point the debris is usually compacted and wet, which means it's heavier and harder to clear. More importantly, if water has been overflowing for multiple rain events, there's a decent chance the fascia behind the gutter has already taken on moisture. Overflow is a lagging indicator, the blockage happened weeks before you saw the water spilling. Calling when you notice the first overflow is smarter than waiting for the second.
Do gutter guards eliminate the need for cleaning?
No. Gutter guards reduce how often debris accumulates inside the channel, but they don't prevent it. Shingle granules get through most mesh designs. Small debris like seed pods and pine needles can collect on top of the guard and eventually wash into the downspout. Guards also require their own periodic cleaning to stay effective. If you have them, you still need the gutters inspected and flushed on a regular schedule, just possibly less often than without them.
What does it mean when gutters pull away from the fascia?
It usually means the hangers have failed or the fascia board itself has softened from moisture. Heavy debris load accelerates both, the extra weight stresses the hanger screws, and any water that gets behind the gutter speeds up wood rot in the fascia. A gutter that's separating from the roofline won't drain correctly even after cleaning. We'll flag it if we see it. Minor rehang work can be handled through our general handyman repairs service without needing a separate contractor.
How long does a gutter cleaning typically take?
A single-story house with standard-length gutters usually runs an hour to an hour and a half. Two-story homes take longer because of the additional setup time and the volume of gutter footage. Heavily compacted gutters that haven't been cleaned in several years add time regardless of the house size. If you're also scheduling pressure washing or window cleaning on the same visit, plan for a half day.
